Why we chose the Jones Mountain Twin Snowboard: The prodigal son returns, packed to the eyeballs with Jones’ top shelf tech.

A stalwart in the Jones line, the Mountain Twin has gone under the knife this season to reinvent itself as a bona fide quiver killer with all the flair and panache you’d expect from the finale of Cirque du Soleil. After a few choice nips and tucks, the crew at Jones have taken their modern-day classic all-mountain snowboard and turned it into one of the most versatile daily drivers on the market.

An award winning and best-selling model, you’ll find the Jones Mountain Twin strapped to the feet of many a discerning rider. It’s all-terrain versatility and relatively low barrier to entry make it one of the most recognisable and requested boards in the world. As the lines between freestyle and freeride blur, we’re opening up the market for boards that can genuinely do it all, the Mountain Twin is way up at the top of that list.

“After a few choice nips and tucks, the crew at Jones have taken their modern-day classic all-mountain snowboard and turned it into one of the most versatile daily drivers ever”

The new shape is the first thing you’ll notice, Jones have eschewed the traditional rounded off tips to deliver a new blunted outline. Reducing excess material and giving you more control and balance when you get the board in the air. This state-of-the-art shape gives you the benefits of an elongated nose, but without the unwieldy and cumbersome drawbacks. It’s still a playful twin, but one that has an access all areas pass for every mountain.

The snazzy new outline is just the first of the upgrades the Mountain Twin has come back with. For the first time ever, Jones have included their 3D Contour base bevels, both the nose and the tail get 4mm of the spoon like shaping. These uplifts give the board a really surfy feel, with bags of edge to edge fluidity. You’re rolling into every turn rather than being abruptly thrown into it, whether its choppy terrain or pristine corduroy each and every turn initiation is effortlessly smooth.

The 2020/21 Mountain Twin is lighter than its predecessors thanks to the new Control Core, with paulownia cutting precious grams and poplar stringers boosting power. The result is a lively, yet damp, feel with a predictable twin flex. The V Core is softer between the feet for more manoeuvrability and stiffer in the nose and tail for some extra pop and power in those key zones.

For deep days and steep runs, you can set your bindings back down the inserts for a more directional feel. Shifting your weight back over the nose bolsters its appeal in the powder, with the slight bevels in the tips giving an extra boost of float. The midbody camber powers up the whole sidecut when you start turning and burning on hardpack, and with your bindings setback you can really work the tail pumping through your turns.

Other upgrades include the shift to biax laminates, ensuring the Mountain Twin retains its playful nature, Traction Tech 3.0 giving extra bite points down the edge for increased grip and a turbo charged Sintered 8000 base taking you all the way from first gear to full throttle in seconds flat.

Whether it’s park, piste or powder that tickles your pickle, the Jones Mountain Twin will be your willing companion. If charging hard is your priority then the Ultra Mountain Twin might be more your bag, but if you’re looking for a dynamic board that’s got the sauce for any and all conditions then the Mountain Twin should be at the top of your Christmas list.

Tester’s Verdict

Rob McCreathWhitelines

“Reading my verdict of last season’s Mountain Twin, the 2021 iteration is almost unrecognisable from its predecessor apart from the paint job. The new outline is the biggest change to its appearance. There’s definitely more of a freestyle look about this one and that’s matched in its performance. The reduced swing weight, lighter core and 3D base profile all boost its park capabilities, but back on the piste and in fresh snow, it was still unmistakeably the Mountain Twin – full of the Jones freeride DNA their boards are known for.

In the past, I’d have recommended this for riders who wanted to spend 70-80% of their time on and off the piste, and occasionally dip their toes in the park. If you’re that kind of rider, it’s still absolutely ideal for you. Better, in fact. The re-design arguably gives you more grip on-piste and more float in powder than last year’s model.

The Mountain Twin has been a best seller in the Jones line for years. I’ve no doubt this year’s model will still appeal to the loyal fans just as much, if not more than ever before, while opening itself up to a whole new camp of riders – those looking to spend a good chunk of their season in the park.”

Tester’s Verdict 2019/20

“There’s not too much to say that hasn’t already been said about the Mountain Twin. It’s billed as the most versatile snowboard in the Jones line – which is true – but it’s substantially more at home on the piste and sidecountry than the park.

“It’s definitely for someone who prioritises pistes and freeriding over time in the park”

Performance on piste is really solid. You don’t need to ride with razor-sharp technique for the Mountain Twin to deliver a responsive and dynamic ride. Float wise it ain’t too bad either. Being a little setback with some nose rocker makes the Mountain Twin a good option for capitalising on powder days without blowing your budget on a quiver stick.

I’m definitely someone who favours all-mountain freestyle over all-mountain freeride decks. Not because I’m a better park than piste rider, but because I’m the complete opposite. I want a board to hold my hand through the park and for me to hold its hand over the rest of the mountain. I guess I’m just sat on the other side of the line from the Mountain Twin. It wasn’t inspiring loads of confidence in the park, but I could more or less switch off everywhere else and it took it all in its stride.

It’s definitely for someone who prioritises pistes and freeriding over time in the park. Or, possibly, for bigger riders who keep getting tripped up on lighter, softer all mountain-freestyle boards.”

Tester’s Verdict 2018/19

Darren Williamsthesnowboardshop.co.uk/

“The freestyle board with a freeride heart, the Jones Mountain Twin is consistently in our top five best selling snowboards. It’s a pretty stiff directional twin model that can be used anywhere over the whole mountain.

“The freestyle board with a freeride heart”

Camber underfoot with a ‘Traction-tech’ edges (think Magna-traction, but less catchy) let you carve hard without the fear of washing out. Rocker in the nose and tail lets you press and butter about the piste/park while simultaneously giving plenty of float in the powder.

It also has a fast sintered base, and a classic Jones look.”
