This year the Mind Expander family has, er, expanded even more – but this one, the Jones Mind Expander splitboard, has already built a nice little reputation for itself. We doubt you’ll find a more unconventional-yet-accessible splitboard out there at the moment; all the wonderful oddness of the original, but in two parts.

“If your patch gets lots of snow but isn’t exactly Chamonix in terms of scale, this’ll do nicely.

Who Is The Jones Mind Expander Split For?

We reckon this one belongs under the feet of someone who loves a bit of splitboarding, but would rather blast up for a quick afternoon on familiar terrain than break new trails far from civilization. If your patch gets lots of snow but isn’t exactly Chamonix in terms of scale, this’ll do nicely.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

We’ve had a bloody good time riding the nimble Jones Mind Expander through trees, where you really feel the benefits of its tight sidecut and rockered profile. The splitboard version has kept all of that, losing only the contoured base of the original.

While it appears to be all nose, this actually has a decent tail too. Unlike a lot of ‘volume shifted’ boards, you’re free to switch it up or spin to win. Once split, the wavy inside edge gives you more reassurance that you can hold your line on slicker sections.

Construction and Materials

Jones has done everything possible to keep the spirit of the solid Mind Expander alive in the split version, but naturally some differences have crept in, including the loss of the flax/basalt stringers that deliver added response. The core is also paulownia and poplar (Jones’ preferred splitboard-specific calibration) rather than paulownia and bamboo. It’s still pretty light, though, which is as good for the way up as it is for the way down. New for this winter is an improved Karakoram clip system, which is lighter than last year’s version but just as easy to fine-tune.
