Who Is The Jones Mind Expander For?

Technically this one is ‘all-mountain’, but it’s a world away from what you’re probably picturing when you hear those words. While you can definitely own the pow, piste or park with this, you might have to rethink what that looks like – and that, essentially, is the point.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The shape – with its stubby tail and long, spoony nose – looks like a natural born freerider, and indeed it’ll excel whenever there’s been a dump. As if it wasn’t already easy enough to stay afloat, the Jones Mind Expander also has a rocker profile, inspired by surfboards.

The lack of camber means that you lose a bit of purchase in the carve, but the wavy edge helps to compensate for that. It’s also got a tight sidecut radius, so it’s better for nipping through tight lines than really getting your elbow down.

“It’s fair to say that the shape is the star here, but it’s reassuring to know that everything under the hood is top quality too”

Construction and Materials

The Jones Mind Expander is here to play; the mostly paulownia core is nice and flexy, with mellow biax fibreglass giving it plenty of torsional twist. When things get hairy there’s a bit of extra response courtesy of strategically-placed stringers, and the placement of the bamboo sections of the core play their part too.

The topsheet remains a thing of beauty, and it’ll stay that way for longer thanks to the rounded sidewalls (made from recycled materials – this is a Jones, after all). It’s fair to say that the shape is the star here, but it’s reassuring to know that everything under the hood is top quality too.

Roundup

Whether you’re in your 20s or your 60s, everyone is at risk of ‘snowboarding mid-life crisis’ – where you just don’t get the same joy out of it that you used to, and are in acute need of a sea change. Enter the Jones Mind Expander, the cast-iron antidote to ‘shrennui’ (copyright WL, 2021).
