Here at Whitelines we’re always on the look out for bright new snowboard talent in the UK scene. But that’s not to say we’re going to turn a blind eye to up and coming European and North American riders that equally impress us either. Judging by the ever-growing amount of decent edits and full length movies that we see every day from am riders and street crews, there is a wealth of fresh talent out there waiting to get noticed.
Spencer Whiting sent us this full part from his 2011/2012 season and we were so impressed with it that we thought it would be downright wrong not to post it – even if there are loads of kids like Spencer who are lucky enough to live by these world class parks. Being the inquisitive bunch that we are, we thought we’d find out a little more about Spencer – you never know, with backside dub 10’s, front 10’s and some impressive pipe tricks already under his belt, he could very well be the next Eric Willet, Sage Kotsenburg or Chas Guldemond:
Hey Spencer, how old are you and how long have you been shredding for?
I’m 17 and have been riding since I was around 3 years old.
You’ve obviously spent a fair bit of time riding the Mammoth park – is that your local mountain then?
Yeah, I live in Mammoth during the winter and that’s my local spot to ride.
Ever been over to Europe to snowboard?
I haven’t been to Europe yet, but I am planning on doing the European Open and O’Neill Evolution over in Switzerland this year.
You’ve obviously already got some skills on a snowboard and we see that you’ve managed to land a few sponsors including Volcom and GoPro – how did you wind up with those and are you looking to start a career as a pro rider?
Haha thanks. I have just been riding and having fun, and a couple years ago Fuel TV contacted me and wanted to do a New Pollution segment with me and that kind of got things rolling and I met up with Volcom shortly after that. I’m looking to just have as much fun riding as I can and see where my career takes me.
When riding Mammoth you must end up rubbing shoulders with a lot of good riders – your style kind of reminds us of Tyler Flanagan’s; do you ever get to ride with any of those guys and do you look up to anyone in particular?
Yeah there’s definitely a lot of really good riders in Mammoth and it’s awesome to see everyone who comes through there because it just pushes you to get better. I look up to Scotty Lago because he’s a got such a sick style in halfpipe and can ride pretty much anything you throw at him and that’s what I’m looking for.
Cheers Spencer!
