Interview | Luke Winkelmann

Competitions and music - Luke Winkelmann fills us in on what's next for him

Taking home Rookie of the Year at the Burton US Open and winning MVP at the first annual Red Bull Recharged last year, the 19-year-old Luke Winkelmann is one to watch. This kid has got style, and we can’t wait to see what 2020 brings for him.

“In between a couple of the contests, I’ll be doing some filming with the Burton crew for a cool project coming out later in the year!”

We caught up with Luke himself just after this year’s Winter X-Games, which was his first to date.

It’s been quite the year for you. How stoked were you on winning Rookie of the Year?
I was really stoked! I had no idea I’d win that award so when they told me I was chosen for it I was pretty speechless.

You also won the MVP award at the Red Bull Recharged, that must have been sick. Tell us a bit about it?
Recharged was a super cool event. So blessed to be asked to go, let alone win the MVP award. It was rider voted so that made it even cooler!

What’s the plan for this season? Are you going to be fully focused on competing or do you reckon you’ll find some time to film as well?
This season is pretty contest focused for sure. In between a couple of the contests, I’ll be doing some filming with the Burton crew for a cool project coming out later in the year! Super hyped for that.

What got you into snowboarding in the first place? Who’s been your biggest inspiration/s?
My dad got me into snowboarding. As soon as I saw him on a snowboard, I wanted to do the same thing! I was about 5 years old when I started, so he was my biggest inspiration at that time. Now I really look up to boarders like Mikkel Bang, Tommy Gesme, Mark McMorris, and one of my best friends Red Gerard. They’ve done a lot in snowboarding and I love how they do it.

So, what’s your current favourite trick? Anything in specific you’d like to learn this season?
My favourite trick is for sure a frontside 360. Most feel good one there is! I’d love to learn some new jump tricks for sure.

We’ve also heard you’re quite into your music. What do you listen to when you ride?
It’s funny I’m super super into music, but I don’t ride with headphones in. I like hearing the snow/wind and staying in tune with what’s happening around me, as well as talk to the homies without pausing my music every time. I do carry around a little mini Burton Mine77 speaker that Jake Burton designed, and I like blasting some music out of the speaker in my pocket while I board so I can hear it while on the lift or before I drop.

Any thoughts/comments on your first X Games?
A dream come true. Never thought I’d make it to this point and I’m just enjoying every moment of it all. Super super blessed!
