Love ’em or hate ’em, you can’t deny the fact that the yearly North American summer camps, and the the flood of edits that come with them, are a good thing for the sport. They help to tie us over until winter, they keep the pros and brands stoked, and they get more kids into snowboarding.
They’ve also become somewhat of a stage for progression. The snow is soft and slushy, everyone around you is throwing down and if you do injure yourself, there’s a couple months healing time before winter rolls around proper.
It’s not rare to see a trick in a summer camp edit that then makes into into a full part the following year. Take Bode Merrill’s one foot inverted backside 720 from a couple years back: he stomped it at High Cascade and the following autumn, we were watching it being chucked in the backcountry in Absinthe’s Resonance.
We’ve had a few noteworthy moments in this year’s edits – Spencer Schuberts snowskate handstand boardslide thingy, Gigi Rüf’s epic arms-out frontside 360 (just watch it to see what we mean…) and a cross-rocket tailgrab trick by Justin Fronius. Don’t miss the backside rodeo to front board by Andy Glader (in a onesie…) in this final camp edit of the season.
Will we be seeing any of these tricks make the transition into video parts next season? Guess we’ll have to wait and see!
