GoPro Hero5 Black 2017-2018 Action Camera Review

From humble (and occasionally hilarious beginnings, the GoPro has become easily the world’s most iconic action camera. The GoPro Hero5 Black is their most sophisticated model to date, yet still retains the easy functionality that’s made it such a hit with all levels of snowboarder.

“A built-in image stabilisation system eliminates much of the dreaded shakiness which can creep into footage”

Naturally the image quality has been stepped up yet again. Video is still at the forefront, with 4K resolution delivering the kind of uber-HD results that we all want these days. Furthermore, a built-in image stabilisation system eliminates much of the dreaded shakiness which can creep into footage, especially when running following-cam.

Photos tends to be a secondary function of any action camera, but the GoPro Hero5 Black has taken a significant leap forwards in that department. You can now shoot photos in Wide Dynamic Range mode to give you more options in post-production. Should you wish to keep things simple, standard photos come in at a decent 12 megapixels, and you can take them in bursts at 30 frames per second.

Some GoPros required a bit of practice before finding your way through the menus became second nature, but things are simpler than ever with the GoProHero 5 Black. The high-quality LED on the back lets you see exactly what you’re capturing, but is also a touchscreen that makes tinkering with the settings an absolute breeze. The single Record button on the top is still present and correct, so when it’s time to film you can get started with one press.

“Tough and waterproof even without a case, the GoPro Hero5 is ideal for any snowboarder wanting high-quality footage from the mountain”

The touchscreen first appeared in the Hero4 Silver, but the Hero5 Black has another new trick up its sleeve. It can be fully voice controlled, which is especially useful if you’ve mounted your GoPro to your helmet. Then when you’ve got the shots you were after, the GoPro phone app allows for quick and easy editing.

Tough and waterproof even without a case, the GoPro Hero5 is ideal for any snowboarder wanting high-quality footage from the mountain. It’s always good to brush up on the fundamentals (for example, check out our How To Use A GoPro Properly guide), but even a card-carrying novice can’t fail to get what they’re looking for with this.

Trade Secrets

Halldor Helgason – Team Rider, GoPro

The HERO5 Black is such a sick camera! The fact that a guy like me can film and shoot cool photos just proves that anyone can do it.

Some of my favourite new features on the camera are the waterproof design without a case, the voice control and the upgraded touch screen. With the GoPro and Quik Apps, you can shoot and edit videos and photos in even better quality.

And not to mention, when you add the Karma Grip and Drone you will be able to get the most insane footage of all time.
