Why we chose the Giro Emerge MIPS Snowboard Helmet: Lightweight low-profile helmet with MIPS technology.

A permanent classic within the world of park-rats and freestyle riders, make way for the iconic Giro Emerge MIPS. With products becoming more and more technical (let’s face it – the mind-boggling additions can sometimes get tiring), we wanted to praise some of the old and gold; remind everyone that not everything needs to be packed with the latest tech in order to be considered top-notch.

The Giro Emerge MIPS is back for winter 2021, and part of the Whitelines 100 (it’s our favourite helmet for the season). Designed with simplicity in mind, the Giro Emerge doesn’t lack in the essential areas. Featuring the industry-leading MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) technology means that an extra layer of protection has been added to the helmet.

What exactly is MIPS? MIPS is a slip-plane technology that sits inside the helmet and is designed to reduce rotational forces that can occur during certain types of impacts. It is made to mimic the brains own protection system as the slip-plane moves inside the helmet (if you were to fall and your head tilts backwards / forwards, the impact on the head will be from an angle).

What the MIPS technology does is that it moves the helmet to protect the head from the angle the impact comes from, minimising the harmful rotational impact on the brain. The integrated MIPS features include two layers of impact-reducing EPP foam that addresses high and low-energy impacts (something that’s inevitable if you’re on a mission to progress as a freestyle snowboarder).

If you’re worried about not being able to fit a beanie underneath your lid, you can always go right ahead and remove both the goggle retainer and earpads to create more space within the helmet. You can, of course, also do this if you’re simply looking to cool off your head.
