Girls Shred Day

Throw a bunch of rad girls into one massive fridge and you’ll have smiles for days

Whitelines was lucky enough to be invited up to Chill Factore in Manchester for Girls Shred Day with Gypsy Snowboarding, Nikita and the BoobyTrap. As the team thought this would be a great way to cultivate their only non-UK born and bred addition on the UK snowboard scene, the fair-haired Finnish girl was sent up on her first ever dome adventure.

“First of all, where the F is the wind, second of all, you are literally snowboarding within a massive fridge, and third, has anyone heard of the concept of daylight?”

The concept of snowboarding within a massive fridge in Manchester while it’s twenty plus degrees and sunny outside is something you might have a hard time to grasp if you’re someone who hasn’t grown up eating chips with weird toppings (curry sauce, really?). First of all, where the F is the wind, second of all, you are literally snowboarding within a massive fridge, and third, has anyone heard of the concept of daylight? No. They have not, so if you’ve just bought yourself a new pair of rad goggles you will have no use of them in a dome.

The set up for Girls Shred Day

After overcoming my first confusion regarding the whole concept of a snow dome I got around to chat with a couple of local shredders while they were building the park set up for the Girls Shred Day. Just to clarify, as a Finnish person who’s spent 5 years of their life living in the Alps, the concept of not having the option of riding park every day is simply not a thing – it is always an option (unless mother nature decides to go all ape shit on you). So, imagine my surprise when learning that domes in the UK do not provide the option for freestyle sessions on a daily basis. And why? Well, of course it has to do with money.

“The Girls Shred Day was a fine example of how sick the riding within the UK snow scene is”

Hailing from the deep core of capitalism, the snow domes do not apparently see freestyle sessions as profitable for the business. I’m not an expert on how the domes make their money, but surely, you’d think they wouldn’t go bankrupt if a tiny corner of the slope was be reserved for the creative minds of freestyle riders all year ‘round?

For someone who’s always taken for granted the easy access to both park and street riding, it was impressive to hear how much effort the riders themselves are putting into pushing the domes to organise more freestyle nights and asking for more features for the park set ups – and the Girls Shred Day was a fine example of how sick the riding within the UK snow scene is. Not only was the level of riding amongst these lovely ladies out of this world, but the fact that everyone was stoked on learning and improving was epic!

The event itself was sold out, so there were about 30 rad ladies lapping the park with more enthusiasm than a five-year-old on Christmas morning. It was a mish mash of girls, everything from beginners to more experienced ones, young guns to older ones, which made the whole thing even more fun. Hitting a box for the first time can be quite intimidating, and the coaches were doing a great job in giving all the girls advice on how to best go about it. Even though the park was quite packed, the coaches managed to take everyone into consideration and made the girls feel comfortable enough to try out new things.

Despite some of the ladies leaving for home with bruised bums it was smiles all around the whole time. On top of the good vibes and great session, the park set up itself was spot on for an event like this – there was something for everyone. Big up for everyone who took part, stoked to see so many rad ladies getting involved!
