Here are the final two episodes of the World Snowboard Tour’s excellent documentary looking at the history of competitive snowboarding.

Episode 4 looks at the dominance of Terje Haakonsen, the inception of the Arctic Challenge and the TTR and the early career of Shaun White (altogether now: aaah, isn’t he cute…). It also gives us an insight at the first batch of Finnish snowboard superstars, with Jussi Oksanen pushing the boundaries of early slopestyle competitions and Heikki Sorsa smashing the record for the highest air.

In the fifth and final episode it’s all about the rapid progression of snowboarding over the past few years. The rivalry between Shaun White and Kevin Pearce, the monstrous world record breaking quarterpipe backside 360 by Terje, the first ever double cork in competition by David Benedek, the dominance of Peetu Piiroinen as a true all-rounder and of course the triple cork, all play a part in the final chapter of this story.

One can only wonder where competitive snowboarding will go from here. Is the current state of affairs – where tricks are carbon copies of each other and robotic double corks are scored more highly than stylish flatspins – here to stay? Is there room for progression into the realm of quad corks, 1620s and the like or have we reached the pinnacle of what the human body can manage on a snowboard?
