Freeriding in France with Clément Bochatay

Take a POV run down one of Chamonix’s classic lines

God damn. Just as everybody’s hanging up their boots and putting the storage wax on for summer, Freeride World Qualifier athlete and Borealis team rider Clément Bochatay is scoring one of the dreamiest lines we’ve seen all season.

It’s your classic European backcountry ménage à trois: A French freerider; freeriding in France; on a French freeride snowboard. Back on his home turf with the local crew, he hit up Chamonix’s ‘Couloir de Cosmique’, off the west face of the Aiguille du Midi.

Even after most resorts have shut up shop for the season, it’s not uncommon for bigger, high-alpine lines like this to come into their best condition as late as mid-May. And when they’re only a 5 minute hike from the top of the cable car, it’s easy to see why the locals were hustling to get first dibs to open it.

That entry looked more exposed than a pervert by a park bench but, for the 90 seconds of wide-open, powder-filled charging that followed, it seemed like a pretty worthy tradeoff.

Bochatay has just returned from his season competing on the Freeride World Qualifier, where he ranked in the top 30. He’s here riding the Leviathan, a new release from Borealis for the coming winter. Stay tuned for our review in The Buyer’s Guide, dropping later this year.
