Commitment | Eiki Helgason’s 84 Rail Attempts

You know what they say, 84th time's a charm.

Way back at the start of this season, Eiki Helgason dropped his three-part series SSS. Combining skating, snow-skating and snowboarding, Eiki’s year-long passion project proved he’s not only one of the most technical rail riders in the game but also one of the most creative. This latest behind the scenes clip highlights another string to the master’s bow – commitment.

“In reality, it wasn’t quite the one-hit-wonder it appears as. It took a few more attempts than that. Eighty-four to be precise. Eight. Four. EIGHTY-FOUR. “

During the snowboard segment, Eiki 5050s a Down-Flat-Elbow-Down-C-Down Kink rail. It looks effortless. As if his Lobster Pro model were fixed to tracks the whole way down. In reality, it wasn’t quite the one-hit-wonder it first appears as. It took a few more attempts than that. Eighty-four to be precise. Eight. Four. EIGHTY-FOUR.

By my ropey freeze-framing and counting skills, I estimate he hiked approx. 2688 steps to get the shot. That’s almost double the amount of the Empire State Building, or one thousand steps more than the Eifel Tower.  How’s that for dedication? I live in a seven-story apartment block and I take the lift every time without fail. Also, I only live on the second floor.

“Eiki, that was wild – respect!”

At only five-minutes long – imagine how much it’s been cut down?! – it puts the puts Helgason’s efforts into perspective. This was one trick, from one feature, from one segment, of a three-part series. Go. back and watch his full SSS film and it’ll put a totally new perspective on the whole thing. Eiki, that was wild – respect!
