http://mpora.com/videos/4WTjhiGwS The third part of our video review of the decade, we’re bringing you Travis Parker & Jussi Oksanen’s joint part from Lame. Released in 2003, this was one of the first films made by Robotfood – a film crew based around the nexus of Travis Parker and David Benedek.
As some of the best riders in the world at the time Travis and David had little problem persuading big name riders (like Jussi) to feature in their projects, but it wasn’t only the standard of shredding that made these films stand out. From the self-deprecating name to the cheesy 80s soundtrack, Lame set out to destroy the idea that snowboard films should take themselves seriously.
This part, with Travis pissing about in a fat-suit at the start, is about as far away from the seriousness of Romain de Marchi’s Vivid section as it is possible to be. Of course this film spawned a whole host of imitators, and within a couple of years everyone was using 80s euro-pop to soundtrack their movies. Another trend this film can legitimately claim some of the credit for starting was the mini-shred craze – check out Travis’ run through the baby park or Jussi’s tow-in to a tiny up-and-over quarterpipe.
But its real importance was that after all the cool gangsta posing and intensely serious video parts of the previous few years, Robotfood made snowboarding look fun again.
