Our pick of this season's best Burton snowboard gear

Jake Burton, the founder of Burton Snowboards, passed in 2019 but remains a key figure in snowboarding. He was a champion Ski racer in his youth before a car accident abruptly ended his Spandex days and he returned to his Economics studies, eventually working as a stockbroker for a time before the lure of standing sideways pulled.

Head-to-head against Tom Sims, in the early years Jake helped set up the US Open and snapped up riders like Craig Kelly to his team. During the 80s, Burton product development was some of the most innovative in snowboarding’s history. The boards quickly developed from elastic foot straps into legit high back bindings, boots and sidecuts.

Burton opened a European office in Innsbruck, Austria, back in 1985 to support Euro operations and to develop the hottest talent from the continent. Extending out to the east, Burton began a distributor model in Japan in 1994, identifying the country as a hotspot for pow rippers.

These days Burton remains the biggest brand in the industry, and as such will inevitably always take some flak, yet it’s still privately owned by the Burton-Carpenter family. After 40 years, they’re not resting on their laurels either. The refinement of step-in technology is a case in point. With that in mind, Burton’s output is always worth keeping an eye out for.

Burton Hometown Hero Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £590, €660, $660

There have been several new additions to the Burton Family Tree this season, but we’re still enamoured by the ol’ faithful. The Burton Hometown Hero is precisely that: a favourite amongst locals; a reliable and consistent workhorse that can keep up with the stallions; and prance with the show ponies just as easily.

Designed to pay homage to Burton’s heartland Vermont, and built to last winter after winter the Hometown Hero is a charger for deep and steep powder days, tree run tangos, laid out carves and everything in between.

Who Is The Burton Hometown Hero For?

Well, thanks to the multitude of Heroes (Men’s, Women’s, Youth, Split) the range of users is about as broad as can be. Riding-wise, though, it errs more on the freeride side of all-mountain, with a chargey personality and a precise nature. If that sounds like your bag, then come on in.

Burton Custom Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £590

Name a more iconic snowboard, go on, we’ll wait. The Burton Custom is an institution unto itself in the snowboard world, and now there’s more choice than ever with a Big Daddy Custom X, the OG Custom which comes in both camber and Flying V profiles, and the Custom Smalls for the groms.

There’s a reason the Custom is a favourite among the pros and punters alike, and that’s because it’s a bit of a beast wherever you choose to take it. The camber version is more aggressive, better for charging and will offer more stability and dynamic energy, whilst the Flying V is slightly more forgiving, and will be a bit better in the powder and soft snow. The Custom definitely isn’t for beginners, the internal layup keeps it super reactive, with a premium fibreglass matrix that channels rider input directly where you want it. A true all-mountain offering, the Custom is just as at home munching miles on the hardpack as it is throwing spins in the pipe.

Burton Free Thinker Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £560

Danny Davis’ freestyle weapon of choice, the Free Thinker is built for hotlapping the park, chomping side hits and decimating natty features across the mountain. The Free Thinker is the park focussed Yin to the Deep Thinker’s powder slaying Yang, and is your ticket to creativity, style and flair for 2023.

Full camber may not be the most popular profile on the market anymore, but there’s no denying it’s the go-to for pure, unadulterated power and pop. It’s not as forgiving as hybrid profiles, but if you’ve got your shit on lock you’ll appreciate the dynamic feel underfoot when you’re boosting off the lip. With it’s al dente flex and carbon layup, the Free Thinker caters towards more experienced riders who can handle a reactive snowboard that won’t hold their hand. To up the freestyle ante, Burton uses a true twin outline (obviously), tapered tips to reduce swing weight and their patented Squeezebox profile to allow for more control with less effort.

Burton Fish 3D Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £590

We’ve all been told at least once over the years not to judge a book by its cover, but you can, in fact, judge the Fish 3D totally by its cover. This is, as you can probably guess, unashamedly a snowboard built for powder. Deep powder, preferably.

The tail shape is almost as funky as the topsheet, the cutouts reduce the surface area to help the rear of the snowboard sink down. In turn, this lifts the nose further out of the snow. In addition to all this, the convex shape funnels snow and air to allow for a really responsive and surfy ride. You’ll find this in the big, rockered nose as well. This clever shaping tech, plus the overall width of the board, allows you to ride it in a smaller size than you might usually opt for. The flat midbody of the Fish 3D gives it a smooth and stable base, and while it won’t be your first choice for threading super gnarly couloirs it’ll throw up slashes and surf turns with the best of them. Tree runs, open bowls and undulating hills covered in fluffy, white, snow are where this little fishy will really make a name for itself.

Burton Family Tree First Cut Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £500

Powder hounds need look no further than Burton’s Family Tree collection. This range of gender-neutral boards is made for charging big mountains, as well as occasionally dipping off-piste. This season, they’ve added three new models to the lineage. Introducing the First Cut, a new freeride board aimed at intermediate to advanced riders, designed for steep and deep conditions. The spoon-like rockered nose gives plenty of lift, whilst the stiffer tail adds stability. However, unlike the Leader, it has a little more flex, making it a great all-rounder, whether you’re venturing out of bounds or just lapping the resort.

Burton Family Tree Territory Manager Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £590

Next up in the Family Tree collection: the Territory Manager, a new backcountry powder board with freestyle flair. If you’re familiar with Whitelines favourite, the Hometown Hero, then you’ll like this deck, with its wide rockered nose for ploughing through pow. However, there’s a more playful feel to the Territory Manager. While directional in shape, the twin-style nose and tail, combined with the camber profile underfoot, are made for ollies, spins and switch riding in the backcountry. If you’re an intermediate to advanced rider who wants to add a freestyle feel to your big mountain missions, then look no further.

Burton Family Tree Forager Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: £700

Now this is a board that’s built for powder. Meet the latest addition to Burton’s Family Tree collection: the Forager. Designed with legendary rider Masa Takeuchi, it’s a swallow-tailed speed demon, ideal for weaving down tree runs or carving big arced turns through a powder field. The wide nose and directional shape provide plenty of lift. However, riding the Forager doesn’t feel like steering a boat: the tapered tail allows quick, responsive turns. Yes, it’s a powder board, but you’ll also be surprised how well this model performs on hardpack. The price is fairly steep, but worth it if you’re heading to Japan or hoping for super deep days this winter.

Burton Cartle Snowboard Bindings 2022-2023

PRICE: £260

Bindings are the oft overlooked part of a set up, but the difference between a premium binding and a cheap plasticky one are vast. The Burton Cartel’s fall very much in the first category, a high-end binding that’s packed with tech offering a reactive ride and a plush feel. This ain’t the Cartel’s first rodeo, and they’ve got the all-terrain formula dialled with a mid-stiff flex and a bunch of rider refined features. One of our favourites is the Flex Slider hinge in the ankle strap, this milled out portion allows the strap to open out fully for you to slot your boot in with ease. The Cartel’s do a bit of everything, and they do it well.
