After the success of the 3L Kimmy Anorak, we’ve been longing for a fully zipped version of the jacket that lives up to the standards of snowboarding heroine Kimmy Fasani. Finally, the wait is over. New for 20/21, the Burton Snowboards AK Gore-Tex 3L Kimmy Stretch Jacket comes with a women’s specific cut, Gore-Tex membrane, and plenty of other features that ensure the high-quality of this bluesign jacket.
By reducing the amount of men’s AK outerwear, Burton’s been able to expand the women’s AK line – something that’s resulted in a more even product offering. The AK Kimmy Stretch jacket is tailored to fit the needs of the backcountry badass Kimmy Fasani and doesn’t fall short on performance. The 3L shell is made with a Gore-Tex membrane, and thus ticks all three boxes of durability, waterproofness and breathability.
“The AK Kimmy Stretch jacket is tailored to fit the needs of the backcountry badass Kimmy Fasani and doesn’t fall short on performance”
A Gore-Tex membrane has around nine billion pores per square inch, with each pore being about 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water. The holes are too small for any elements to get through, but large enough for moisture to be able to escape (this stops things feeling clammy).
Adding to the jacket’s breathability are the pit zip vents. When things start to really heat up, just open up the zippers to let in an extra breeze to help you cool down. As features go, a small band-aid sized RECCO reflector can also be found in the sleeve of the jacket, making it easier for the mountain rescue team to locate you (remember to head out with a full avi kit if you are going out in the backcountry).
The regular fit, stretchy material and tailored shaping at both elbows and shoulders allow for easier movement. You won’t feel as restricted when hiking up the hill or when reaching for something in your backpack.
During the last years, companies have taken steps towards becoming more socially responsible. By offering products that have been bluesign approved, Burton too is pushing for a more sustainable future within the industry.
It’s good to see brands putting more and more effort into producing quality technical backcountry outerwear for women. The Burton AK Gore-Tex 3L Kimmy Stretch Jacket is a great example of this.
The model in the photo is 5’4” (165cm) tall and wearing size S.
