A bona fide classic, the Ion is one of the stiffest boots in the Burton Men’s line up, and a firm favourite amongst the team and aggressive riders alike. Coming in both a Dual Zone High Power Focus Boa and a Speed Zone lacing option, the Ion’s popularity stems mainly from its plush internal layup and powerful, responsive feel.

It’s not the cheapest boot out there, but if you’re willing to drop the cash, then you’ll find yourself with the precision and power of a SR-71 Blackbird and the deluxe comfort of an Emirates First Class cabin.

Who Is The Burton Ion For?

Not the for the faint of heart, the Ion’s pack a pretty hefty punch despite their modest weigh in. They’re more suited to advanced riders who want something for charging hard and fast, and who need a boot to keep up with them when they’re pushing it to the limit.

Shell & Outsole

Sitting at the top end of the flex (and price) spectrum the Ion has got to perform on groomers, in the park and out into the backcountry, and the outer shell is where Burton make sure that they can handle anything that comes their way. A foil layer underfoot reflects heat back into the boot, a snow-proof gusset keeps the elements at bay and the rugged outsole provides extra grip for those boot packing missions.

Although a more expensive endeavour, Burton use 1:1 lasting in the Ions, to ensure that there’s minimal movement between the liner and shell, plus the welded backstay keeps the boot solid in your bindings for instant response and energy transfer.

The EST-Optimized midsole lowers your centre of gravity, and ReBounce cushioning is built directly into the shell for added impact protection. Packing maximum dampening and cushioning into minimal material seems to be a Burton special combo, delivering great board feel and reduced overall weight.

Liner

The outer shell is what draws your eye to a boot, but there’s no denying its what’s inside that really separates the wheat from the chaff. While the straight out the box comfort is top notch, Burton use their fully heat mouldable Life Liners to really dial in the fit, add this to the performance foam found throughout, and you’ve got a liner that’ll form to the specific contours and shape of your feet.

DRYRIDE Heat Cycle Lining works overtime to wick away moisture and maintain an optimum environment inside your boot, there’s no guarantee for smell, but they’ll certainly help out with the swamp foot after a long day slush slashing in the spring.

“One of our favourites year after year, the Ion is the boot that keeps on giving”

Roundup

Like a hard candy with a smooth chocolatey centre, the Ion’s are predictably rough and rugged on the outside but slide your feet into a pair and you get the luxury of the best Burton has to offer. One of our favourites year after year, the Ion is the boot that keeps on giving.
