Why we chose the Burton Family Tree Straight Chuter Snowboard: This is point and shoot at its very best.

Clapping eyes on the Straight Chuter you can immediately see where it yearns to be ridden- high stakes fall lines, narrow chutes, and steep couloirs. The fully directional shape with an elongated diamond nose is made to float with aplomb regardless of how deep a day it is. New to Burton’s Family Tree line for 2020/21, the Straight Chuter is a world class freeride snowboard.

A backseat camber puts considerable power through the tail of the board, driving your turns and keeping you solid through the whole arc. Transitioning into a softer rockered nose to lift it out of the snow and give you a surfy feel up front when you’re riding the white wave.

“The fully directional shape with an elongated diamond nose is made to float with aplomb regardless of how deep a day it is”

As well as a 4cm setback, the Straight Chuter employs a stonking 18mm of taper, not only aiding with the effortless float, but making the board more manoeuvrable for those tight spots. The wider nose is like a heat seeking missile, navigating its way down gnarly spines and corridors with confidence.

Everything about the Straight Chuter is high spec and high tech, designed specifically to cut weight while still packing a serious punch. The FSC Certified Dragonfly 600G Core, steps off the scales at (you guessed it) 600grams, which for reference is only a tad heavier than an average pint of beer.

When you’re riding the worlds gnarliest terrain every movement counts, you have to be precise and in control at all times and the Straight Chuter brings responsiveness by the bag load to cater to your every move. Carbon infused fibreglass laminates calibrate a super reactive torsional feel allowing you to finetune your movements.

Where the Straight Chuter really steps it up internally is the Multizone EGD, the wood grain pattern is disrupted in four specific zones to deliver more power and precision. Either side of the channel down the edge of the board in the toe and heel zones, the wood runs horizontal rather than matching the standard vertical configuration. This allows the board to flex more in those areas, giving you the ability to drive more pressure to the edges for increased control and bite. Burton’s Squeezebox profile also differs the thickness of the core down the length of the board, thicker either side of your bindings for increased power transfer and thinner underfoot for a more flexible zone. The board is easier to manoeuvre, lighter and snappier thanks to this versatile mashup.

“The price tag isn’t to be sniffed at, but it reflects the premium quality materials, and high-end construction found in the Straight Chuter”

Doing their bit to save the world, Burton has engineered the Straight Chuter with a laquerless topsheet, PFC free wax and bio-based Super Sap Epoxy to reduce its carbon footprint. All Burton boards are also now wrapped in recycled, and recyclable, packaging.

The price tag isn’t to be sniffed at, but it reflects the premium quality materials, and high-end construction found in the Straight Chuter. If you’re looking for something easy going and mellow, this ain’t it, this is pure power and precision wrapped up and raring to go.

Tester Verdict 2020/21

“I got to ride the Straight Chuter on an early season pow day at Kiroro Resort, Japan. I really had a lot of fun on this board. It was early season, so it was a bit low tide in most off piste areas in Kiroro, so we rode a lot of side pow, piste and short deep pow runs. This board really knows how to charge hard. You can point this thing and it goes.

“It has a solid pop in ollies and springs out of nose presses and butters”

It’s nice and stable when boosting at high speed on groomers with the crew. Even later in the day when it got bumpy it still charged and felt smooth – got to love that back-seat camber! I rode the 155cm and it was pretty narrow down through the middle of the board, but this made it really nimble edge to edge. It has a solid pop in ollies and springs out of nose presses and butters. In pow the Straight Chuter will handle whatever sized drop you throw yourself off, the nose is pretty wide and provides plenty of float.

For it being a little narrow for a pow board, I was impressed at how well it went in deeeeep stuff. It was right at home smashing knee(ish) deep japow between tight trees. It’s such a sick board, with an equally steezy top sheet. If you are looking for a freeride board that floats well in pow, is stable smashing pistes or technical steeps but is forgiving enough to play around on; this board is a no brainer!”

“The Burton Snowboards Straight Chuter is Burton’s big mountain freeride gun with a tapered directional shape, set back camber, wider rockered nose and shorter stubby tail.

“The perfect snowboard for big mountain riders who charge hard at full throttle”

The Straight Chuter is a snowboard that takes no prisoners, an aggressive deck that expects aggressive, full bore riding. I loved the response or this board and the feeling of power carving hard and fast on the groomers, but if you switch off that power will spank you.

The wider rockered nose, tapered shape, and set back camber combined with shorter stiff tail gives an awesome effortless float and great maneuverability in the powder. The Straight Chuter is the perfect snowboard for big mountain riders who charge hard at full throttle.”
