UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Burton Custom X here

It may not be as telegenic as carving or side hits – and may conjure images of lycra-clad record-chasers – but screaming down a perfectly-groomed run at warp speed remains one of snowboarding’s simplest pleasures. The Burton Custom X is built with just that in mind, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better piste-charger.

“The Burton Custom X takes the all-mountain credentials of the classic Custom (directional twin design, camber profile, the varying-thickness ‘Squeezebox’ core) and turns it all up to 11”

The Burton Custom X takes the all-mountain credentials of the classic Custom (directional twin design, camber profile, the varying-thickness ‘Squeezebox’ core) and turns it all up to 11. The Squeezebox is enhanced with carbon just outside the feet for more pop, and the wooden core is lighter yet just as strong.

The whole thing is stiffer from nose to tail, which is exactly what you need when you really want to hoon it, but it’s no plank. The Burton Custom X has a lightweight, lively feel that responds to your every command – although in less experienced hands, the lack of margin for error could prove disastrous.

It’s definitely not for everyone, but when it’s under the feet of the right rider there really is nothing like the Burton Custom X. If you’ve mastered the mountain and outgrown your current weapon, here’s an upgrade well worth considering.

Tester’s Verdict

Mike Brindley – whitelines.com

“Burton tweaked the shape of the Custom X this year, so I was intrigued to see how the ride itself changed as a result – and by all accounts the slightly more freestyle silhouette has done little to dampen the drive of their longstanding powerhouse.

“Around resort, as per usual, be prepared to fly if you’re pointing this down a clear piste or kicker-run in, but also know that it’s not wholly without a playful side”

First impressions in chopped-up powder were that this thing was really yearning for an open field to fly through, and although I found it a little bit hard work through quick reactive turns, when hits came into view, it was easy to hold a line and get plenty of extra boost.

Around resort, as per usual, be prepared to fly if you’re pointing this down a clear piste or kicker-run in, but also know that it’s not wholly without a playful side – with more solid snow under your feet it’s dangerously close to discarding the hard-nut persona that that ‘X’ implies.”
