Burton Announce New Binding System

Introducing the Strap On, Burton's latest push in binding innovation

Burton have been leading from the front with innovation since the 70’s. They’ve had raging success with everything from space-age new materials to nostalgia fuelled, reimagined classics. Today, rumours of their next breakthrough in binding technology for the 21/22 season have surfaced for the first time.

“The Strap On bridges the gap between traditional and quick entry bindings”

Not content to rest on their laurels, the Big B have taken it one step further with their new boot to board interface. Introducing the all-new, fully customisable, size adjustable Burton Strap On. An evolution of the hugely popular Step On system, the Strap On bridges the gap between traditional and quick entry bindings.

No strangers to experimental design, Burton know first-hand just how tricky it can be to penetrate new sectors of the market. When the Hard On system flopped after its unexpected early release in 2017, Burton had to pull out deflated but went back to the drawing board more determined than ever. Once Lead Engineer Lou B. Wanger spotted a gap in the market, he and his team started playing around with the concept of a hybrid binding and began fleshing it out.

“People love the idea of Step On,” Lou told us. “But there was a gaping hole for those who wanted the best of both worlds, too many people have been shafted by a binding that doesn’t quite fit their remit”

The Strap On uses the cleat system found on the Step On models, but the chassis of the binding also features traditional ankle and toe straps. Burton’s Double Take Ratchets work in conjunction with the new Asymmetric Double Ended Straps for quicker ladder uptake and faster engagement of the buckles. Size matters with the Strap On, and they’ll be available in two options: Strap On X and Strap On XXX, which cover the range from US sizes 5-13.

“In line with their sustainability goals for 2021/22, Burton are trialling a new initiative in which the Strap On bindings will be delivered in discreet, unmarked packaging”

The Strap On comes with its own specific mounting hardware and specially designed inserts for ease of use. The highback has also been redesigned to feature an updated FLAD (Forward Lean Adjustment) system to work with the hybrid bindings, now the sleek Forward Lean And Cleat Interface Dial (FLACID) sits in its place.

In line with their sustainability goals for 2021/22, Burton are trialling a new initiative in which the Strap On bindings will be delivered in discreet, unmarked packaging, so as to be more easily reused or recycled.

Talk of an entry-level pricepoint is still in the pipeline, but we’ll keep you updated as we get closer to the release.
