Burton AK Helium Power Grid 2020-2021 Women’s Snowboard Base Layer Review

Why we chose the Burton AK Helium Power Grid Snowboard Base Layer: Lightweight base-layer designed to boost breathability.

System built for high aerobic activity, Burton’s AK Helium mid- and base layer line is perfect when looking for something to stack underneath your snowboard jacket and pants when heading out on a slightly more strenuous adventure.

The AK Helium Power Grid base layer comes in shapes and sizes suited for both men and women. With a quick-drying moisture-wicking fabric at its very core, the base layer is designed to boost breathability.

In order for a wicking fabric to do its job, which is to move moisture to the surface of the layer, it needs to be in direct contact with your skin – hence why a next-to-skin fit is important. With exactly this in mind, the AK Helium base layer has been designed with a slim fit to maximise dryness and breathability.

When being on the move all day, you don’t just want to be sure that your base-layer does a good job at keeping you dry. If it can keep you from stinking up the place with unpleasant aromas, that’s a big plus as well. Sweat has a nasty habit of soaking into your clothing, especially when slim-fitted, and leaving a smell behind that can be hard to get rid off – even after its been washed. However, by choosing to use the right fabric this can be avoided. This is exactly what Burton has done. Nice one Burton.

The Polartec power grid material that has been used in the fabric is odour controlled, meaning you won’t have to worry about the smell even when you’re beginning to sweat. The fabric has also got a UPF 50+ rating, so if you want to ease up on the layers and hike up wearing just a top you won’t need to worry about the sun rays getting through and causing you harm.

By choosing a slim-fitted lightweight design, Burton’s also made sure the fabric moves with you and added any excess weight to the mix. Hiking off the beaten path in a heavy base layer might not only cause you to sweat more, it’ll also generally-speaking slow you down.

As base layers go, added features for comfort are never bad. The chafe-free softlock seams are there to stop the base layers from rubbing against the skin, while the thumb loops prevent the sleeves from sliding up whilst you’re strapping in.

For added comfort, the tights have also been designed with a high-rise waist – minimising the risk of you showing off any bare skin when bending down or tweaking into a grab.

Bluesign approved, the Burton AK Helium Power Grid Base Layer is a great lightweight base-layer designed to boost breathability and a great choice whether you’re planning to venture out in the backcountry or spend the day lapping the park.
