Borealis

Our pick of this season's best Borealis snowboard gear

Emerging from the Mont-Blanc region in 2013, Borealis is the brainchild of French-English snowboarder Ben Hall. Hall wanted to use his experience riding to create a line of snowboards that offered premium quality and high performance but not at the expense of the environment. Borealis joined the EOCA (European Outdoor Conservation Association) and donate €5 from every sale on their website to not-for-profit organisations and their HQ is powered by 100% renewable energy.

Borealis have invested heavily in sustainable alternatives, including Bioplastic topsheets and bamboo. You’ll see the bamboo theme runs heavily in Borealis product line, with the majority of their topsheets using the light aesthetic and some using the snappy wood in their core. Bamboo is a great option as it grows so quickly, and Borealis infuses Greenpoxy Bio-Resin into the topsheets to weatherproof them.

A cool initiative Borealis have gotten involved with is their upcycling programme with NoK boards. They send all their discarded hardware to NoK who turn the offcuts into longboards. It’s a great way to minimise waste and avoid products going to landfill at the end of their initial life cycle.

The jewel of Borealis’ pro team is Clement Bochatay who has been working with Borealis since the beginning. In 2018 Clement took on some of the biggest and best riders in the world when he competed in the Freeride World Tour. Although he didn’t win, he certainly made a splash and elevated Borealis’ profile to international heights.

As it stands for winter 22/23, Borealis currently manufacture solid snowboards, splitboards, skateboards and skis (boo!). A longtime Whitelines favourite in their line is the Marauder, which has earned multiple spots in the Whitelines 100 since it appeared on our radar.

Borealis Tundra Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €529

While we can’t fault the Borealis crew’s ability to put together a snowboard, we have to take issue with whoever comes up with the names.

Here you’ve got a top-quality all-rounder that’s just as home in the park as it is in the sidecountry, lumbered with a moniker that suggests pure high-altitude gnarboarding. Something that infers its thrilling, Cheshire-cat-grin-inspiring delights would surely be more appropriate – ideally with a terrible pun thrown in for good measure. May we suggest… the Fundra?

In any case, it says a lot about the Borealis Tundra that that’s the only criticism we have.

Who Is The Borealis Tundra For?

This is Borealis’ quiver killer; one board to take out in any and all conditions. If that’s what you’re after, and you’re also a bit keen on the planet, then this covers both bases with aplomb. The stunning topsheet screams ‘one with nature’ – and that’s the kind of virtue-signalling we can get fully behind.

Borealis Alpine Pro Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €760

With a special focus on sustainable manufacturing and fostering a connection with the outside world, Borealis are “Driven by performance, and inspired by nature”. Designed in collaboration with FWT stalwart Clement Bochatay, the Alpine Pro is a snowboard that allows for technical riding in gnarly terrain but also gives you the opportunity to throw down some freestyle when the time is right. Sitting at an al dente 8/10 on the flex scale, the Alpine Pro will appeal to more experienced riders, with the carbon layup keeping it reactive and responsive, whether you’re bombing it on the hardpack or threading the needle through a couloir.

Borealis Koi Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €549

This little fishy was born to pay homage to freeride mecca Japan. It’s a love letter to Hokkaido’s wide open bowls, epic tree runs and the blower powder that thousands of us flock to every year to ride. The super directional shape with its long rockered nose guarantee you supreme floability in deep snow, whilst the cambered section towards the tail gives some extra grip and allows for powerful slashes from the back foot. Like many freeride-centric snowboards, the Koi moonlights as a nifty carving deck, with extra traction points down the edges to offer rock solid hold through turns.

Borealis Marauder Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €579

Just take a look at the Borealis Marauder, ain’t she a beaut? There’s no prizes for guessing where this snowboard makes a name for itself, the extremely directional outline alone earmarks this as a powder cannon. But fear not, the Marauder won’t be sitting in the locker waiting for pow days, it’s a Whitelines team favourite for munching miles on the hardpack, too. The volume shifted nature of the board gives you the agility that powder decks can often be lacking, whilst the extra width also pays dividends when you’re going hell for leather up on the edges.
