Bonfire Aspect 3L 2017-2018 Snowboard Jacket Review

Boasting the highest specs in Bonfire’s ‘Platinum’ outerwear collection, the Bonfire Aspect 3L snowboard jacket is aimed at the adventurous rider who sees opportunities far beyond the piste-markers.

The 3L is in reference to the three layers of material used in the jacket. The ‘Tufftech’ fabric is highly durable yet lightweight, and the 30,000mm waterproofing will keep you dry in everything from a gnarly Alaskan blizzard to late-season rain showers. Breathability is rated at 20,000g, which allows sweat to escape almost as quickly as it appears.

If you’re still not convinced, look to the fully taped seams, powder skirt and multi-purpose cuffs. You have the choice of either tightening the cuff in the usual manner, or threading the rubber extender between your thumb and forefinger for a locked-up gaiter feel.

Bearing in mind that movements on the mountain aren’t the same as those made at ground level, Bonfire overhauled the fit to make it even more shred-ready. Thanks to these new considerations you get unrestricted movement and comfort in spades, with every seam and panel sitting just where it should.

As well as the two front pockets, the Bonfire Aspect 3L also boasts a sleeve pass pocket and media pocket. With the latter, you can even use your phone through the touchscreen-friendly plastic, allowing you to answer calls or pause music without the need to expose your handset to the elements.

“Like all equipment designed for more serious snowboarding, especially that which takes you out of bounds, it’s worth paying for stuff that works”

The vents on the front don’t have a mesh backing, but that’s not an oversight; these are in fact ideal for long hikes in the backcountry. As you walk, air enters through the front of the jacket and exits out the back, giving you maximum temperature control on those warmer-than-average ascents. Riding with them wide open is amazingly refreshing, but be sure to check they’re closed before heading into nipple-deep pow!

Like all equipment designed for more serious snowboarding, especially that which takes you out of bounds, it’s worth paying for stuff that works. While the Bonfire Aspect 3L snowboard jacket has all the tech you need, it also leaves a little more in your wallet than you’d expect.
