Choosing the right snowboarding jacket is as important as getting the right snowboard, or finding the best fitting boots. As much as the colour and a cool design can affect your choice, there are plenty of more technical aspects that shouldn’t go unnoticed, such as the jackets waterproofing and breathability ratings. Most jackets come as part of a set with a similar spec pair of pants, you can double up and keep the brand consistency, or mix and match to your hearts content.
“Purchasing a new snowboard jacket can be quite overwhelming if you don’t know what to look for”
The waterproof rating is measured in millimetres (mm), this refers to the depth of water that is required to penetrate the fabric (based on filling a one-inch diameter tube). The higher the rating, the more waterproof the outerwear.
Breathability is measured in grams. The ratings refer to the weight of water that can pass through a square metre of fabric in 24hours. Bear in mind though, that the testing protocols aren’t universal and can lack consistency between brands.
There are plenty more key specs you should take into consideration when purchasing your next snowboard jacket, and you can read more about it in our in-depth article on how to choose your snowboard jacket and pants.
