Best Wide Snowboards 2016-2017

Our favourite wide snowboards of the year, as chosen by the Whitelines Team

UPDATE: Check out our review of the Best 2018/2019 Wide Snowboards here

A quick survey of the world’s top pros reveals one undeniable truth; snowboarding is a small person’s game. There are exceptions – Mikkel Bang, Danny Wheeler – but for the most part the taller, bigger guys have a tougher job. It’s just basic physics.

This is partially down to foot size. If your toes hang over the end of your board, they will most likely drag on those deep carves. Fortunately, more and more brands make wide versions of their range, so those with big feet are well catered for.

Some boards are wider to compensate for the fact that they’re also a lot shorter than your average snowboard. We’ve not included here – head to our Best Snowboard Shapes page to get an idea of what they’re all about.

This list instead focuses on the wider versions of standard sticks. So if you want a conventional ride that works for your plus-sized hooves, you’ll find it below.

Elan El Grande Snowboard 2016-2017

Elan’s El Grande is a board that’s only available in its super-wide size – a welcome trend for the big-footed.

It’s built for a thrashing, with carbon and Kevlar in the construction, and it’s pretty stiff and responsive too.

Ride Berzerker Snowboard 2016-2017

Jake Blauvelt’s not a particularly big dude, but in the process of increasing the size of his Berzerker for those who are, he’s lost none of what makes it great.

This wider version of this slightly setback weapon performs impeccably, no matter where you take it.

Like their factory buddies at Never Summer, SIMS do wide versions of all their boards too.

So while it’s not surprising, it’s to be commended all the same. The Blade is for the carving fans out there, who’ll be able to get lower than ever without scraping their toes.

Völkl Alright Snowboard 2016-2017

The wide version of this is a massive 167cm long, but you don’t have to be Hagrid-esque to enjoy it.

It’s been designed to feel like something much shorter when you’re on piste – those elongated nose and tail sections only really coming into play once you’re in the deep stuff.
