Looking for a genuinely good snowboard that isn't gonna break the bank? Here's our top picks for the best value snowboards for this season.

We all love a bit of new kit, right? Although your wallet might not be as stoked as you are about your new set up… The cost of trips seems to be rising each year and when you’re shelling out upwards of a few hundred bucks for a ski pass, it makes sense to start trying to save a few pennies where you can. So, which is the best value snowboard? It’s hard to say, there’s a lot of factors that influence it, and a lot of personal choices involved.

“These are the snowboards that we felt performed above and beyond what you could reasonably expect from their price tag”

People get stung all too often when they buy cheaper snowboards, which turn out to be poor quality and end up breaking after a few uses. But fear not! We’ve searched long and hard over the past winter and put a helluva lot of equipment through its paces. We’ve spent time scouring trade shows and trawled on-snow demos hunting for the best value snowboards for winter 2020-2021.These aren’t all basic beginner boards either, these are the snowboards that we felt performed above and beyond what you could reasonably expect from their price tag.

(Rider: Fin Bremner / Pic: Ed Blomfield)

These aren’t just the cheapest boards on the market, these are all high quality, well-made products with a bafflingly small price tag. Every product in this list has the Whitelines seal of approval for a banging snowboard at a banging price, and for arguments sake we’ve capped the list at £400, otherwise we could be here all day.

Salomon Dancehaul (Unisex) Snowboard 2020-2021

Whitelines Choice Winner: Best All-Mountain Snowboard
PRICE: £400 / $450
BUY DIRECT FROM SURFDOME

While on the surface the Dancehaul looks like a uni-directional charger for lycra clad speed demons with a lob on for carbon additives, it’s way more playful than you’d think. The Popster Core is milled out down the length to deliver pop and power underfoot and playful softer sections inside the inserts. With a middle of the road flex and a smidge of rocker to lift the contact points in the tips you’re on track to press longer and butter better. While it does feature a taper, the inserts aren’t setback so you’re still centred over the board if you want to get your freestyle on.

Rome Artifact Snowboard 2020-2021

Whitelines Choice Winner: Best Men’s Freestyle Snowboard
PRICE: £350 / $400

A true twin shape will always be the go-to profile for a dedicated freestyle deck, and that’s what the Artifact has gone for here. Switch, regs, backwards, forwards, hardways, easyways, upside down, right way up, the Artifact feels completely balanced on the ground and in the air. Granted, you’ll lose the all-mountain versatility that a longer nose, stiffer tail, or taper that a directional twin offers, but the Artifact isn’t chasing those kinds of highs. This one’s all about floating through the air, not the powder.

CAPiTA Paradise Women’s Snowboard 2020-2021

Best for: A great value, great all rounder
PRICE: €420
BUY DIRECT FROM SURFDOME

While terrain specific boards are awesome, they can pigeon-hole you at times. Your super directional swallow tail is gonna be ace when it’s been spewing all week, but won’t fare so well when the conditions only allow for white out park laps. The versatile nature of the Paradise means you can go sniffing out pow stashes in the morning, and cruise over to the park to booter shoot when it gets tracked out.

KORUA Shapes Dart Snowboard (Unisex) 2020-2021

Best for: Sinking the tail in pow and railing turns on the piste – a crazy fun pocket rocket
PRICE: £400 / €449

The versatility comes down to both its profile and construction. The Dart’s Float Camber blends positive rocker from the tail right out to beyond the front inserts, before transitioning into an early rocker rise. Combined with Korua’s Carving Specific Sidecut, it makes the Dart deceptively agile from edge to edge, despite its whopping waist width (269mm on the 156 model). That width is also the reason it’s possible to get so damn low on those elbow carves without the risk of your boots dragging out and the stiffer, more reactive tail does a good job of holding on as the G’s increase through the arc.

Rome Stale Fish Snowboard 2020-2021

There’s plenty of similar shapes on the market, Rome aren’t pretending otherwise, but the unique Free The Ride Camber and Directional Diamond 3D nose helps to give the Stale Fish the edge… and the float, and the forgiveness and the versatility, come to think about it.

Slash Happy Place Snowboard (Unisex) 2020-2021

Best for: Premium tech at an outrageously good value price
PRICE: €400

For a snowboard that’s built for the park, the Happy Place still manages to deliver outside the confines of it. The versatile camrock profile brings your all-terrain versatility by the bag load. All the benefits of a dynamic and poppy camber midbody, with the playful and floaty rockered tips to ease up the ride. It’s not going to win awards for freeriding, but it’ll certainly get the job done should you find a little pow stash hidden away.

YES. Hello Women’s Snowboard 2020-2021

Best for: Bang for your buck and a banging all mountain shredstick
PRICE: £395 / $450

Where the Hello is going to outplay other snowboards in its category and price bracket is with its use of YES’ signature Underbite edge profile. This allows this relatively soft board to have the bite and solid carving ability of a board far stiffer. The edges are pulled in by the bindings, creating three defined zones focusing on the initiation, hold, and release of the turn. This distributes your weight giving more pressure where you need it during each individual stage, with the end result being a smooth carve with more grip than you’d think possible.
