Why we chose the Bataleon Wallie Snowboard: It just oozes cool, from the blunt tips and innovative 3D profile to a bold new graphic that’s one of our favourites this year. It’s amazing to ride, too.

In a few short years the Wallie has established itself as possibly the most legit park and rail deck in the Bataleon range. For a company that built itself on ‘catch-free’ freestyle boards that’s no small claim. Taking inspiration from skateboarding, the radically steep nose and tail design – together with Triple Base tech – makes learning critical tricks over obstacles easier, and brings the board’s creative potential to another level.

Who Is The Bataleon Wallie For?

Anyone who takes their rail game seriously. The Wallie is not going to win any prizes on a powder day, but if your idea of a good time is lapping the park drag, bonking the crap out of natural features or maybe even trying to dial a wallride on some weird street set-up, this thing has your back. Just ask Ethan Morgan – it’s his go-to soft deck.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The Wallie is a true twin shape, with a nose and tail that look like they’ve been lopped off by an enthusiastic Frenchman with a guillotine. The blunt look is not just for show, though; it keeps the overall length and weight down, so the board is super easy to spin.

The shape also plays into the trademark ‘WallieTips’ – basically a short, steep kick at either end. These make you less likely to hook up when ollie-ing onto or over features, as well as helping to jam the base up transitions; think ledges, poles, picnic tables or anywhere you might want to smash out a lip trick. It’s a simple idea but it really does work.

The Triple Base itself is the least pronounced in the Bataleon range. ‘Jib 3BT’ is essentially a standard flat base between the feet, with a gentle bevel introduced only outside the bindings. The idea is that the board feels more stable when setting up for tricks (as opposed to aggressive 3BT which lets you roll rapidly across a narrow centrebase). It still reduces edge catches, though, especially with the addition of Sidekicks (basically spooned areas) at the wide points.

Like all Bataleons, the Wallie features traditional camber from nose to tail, but the version deployed here is super mellow: it’s got more ollie power than a fully flat board, but it’s not so spring-loaded that it will make technical or low speed tricks feel nervous.

Construction and Materials

The Wallie’s wood core consists of 50 percent Swiss paulownia and 50 percent poplar. It’s not the absolute lightest option in the line but given the length options top out at 156 you won’t struggle to throw this board about; plus, it’s a strong blend that can withstand all the abuse those Wallie Tips invite.

A hollow Central Super Tube (CST) gives your ollies a little more wu-tang, while carbon fibre stringers run edge-to-edge near the inserts to improve power transmission. That said, a biax laminate topsheet means the overall flex never strays into gnarlesville; this is fundamentally a playful board that aims to make it as easy as possible for you to learn new shit. It’s finished off with an extruded base that prioritises durability over pure speed, and a bold graphic series that, like a new Apple product, manages to hit the sweet spot between simple and eye-catching. Fun fact: the grid of dots on the topsheet is inspired by the textured plastic of old VHS tapes. Simple Pleasures, anyone?

Roundup

These days we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to soft and playful boards, but the Bataleon Wallie genuinely stands out from the competition. A full four years after it launched, that squared-off silhouette still demands attention, and a fresh lick of paint has only added to the appeal. If you want to progress your skills in the park then at the end of the day the Wallie’s 3D profile has more to offer than a regular board – and in fact, paired with that innovative nose and tail, it opens the door to a whole new category of trick.
