No board better embodies the recent push beyond traditional shapes than the Surfer. It is a lovingly designed snow craft with a ton of volume up front, the latest in 3D technology, and a swallow tail that would make Dimitrije Milovich smile (look him up). In short: one sexy beast.

Who Is The Bataleon Surfer For?

Want to glide past your mates on powder days like you’re in the back seat of a Rolls Royce? Enjoy blasting across the whole of the trail map more than lapping the same old park chair? The Surfer is the answer to your prayers. Turning never looked – or felt – this good.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

In a market now crowded with eye-catching directional shapes, the Surfer retains an unmistakable silhouette. A massive, shovel-like nose tapers down to a full-on swallow tail. The idea here is to maximise float and minimise back leg burn. It basically takes no effort to keep this board (ahem) surfing on top of deep snow – especially with the addition of some dramatic 3D bevel, which lets the nose plough through powder, slush and chop like the hull of a boat cutting through waves.

Despite the extra width towards the front, the Surfer turns on a dime thanks to an aggressive sidecut and a traditional camber profile. The beauty of a swallow tail is that it ekes out every last millimetre of running length from a shorter overall design. The result? Nimble carving performance with blistering edge grip.

Construction and Materials

It’s not quite the kitchen sink, but Bataleon have certainly thrown a few taps at this board. Their Ultra Light core is second only to the (wait for it) Super Ultra Light core. At 70% Swiss paulownia and 30% poplar it is a featherweight and lively platform to build upon. Six carbon Supertubes have been milled into it (three on each side) to improve carving response and keep the board feeling stable on edge, even at high speed.

Speaking of stability, the Surfer also features Bataleon’s AirRide technology, an additive within the core that helps dampen vibrations for a smooth-ass ride. Yet more carbon (traditional strips, this time) can be found at the nose and tail; they reinforce the extreme elements of the board’s shape and ensure that its camber profile feels snappy.

A triax-laminate topsheet turns up the torsional stiffness (exactly what you need for aggressive turns) but it’s worth noting that from tip to tail the surfer’s flex is pretty relaxed. This is a more accessible ride than many people realise. Finally, there’s a sintered base that’s not top-of-the-line race grade fast, but it’s no slouch either.

“It’s a pure turning machine, free of compromises, but it’s also more versatile than you might imagine”

Roundup

If your best park days are in the rear-view mirror, or you just want to treat yourself to the ultimate quiver stick, then it still doesn’t get better than the Surfer. It’s a pure turning machine, free of compromises, but it’s also more versatile than you might imagine. Slash the pow, surf the slush, carve the corduroy: whatever the snow conditions, this thing is a ton of fun – and guaranteed to turn heads.
