UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Bataleon Magic Carpet here

If you’ve ever been told that only directional snowboards will do on a powder day, it was by someone who’s never been on a Bataleon Magic Carpet. When every contour of the mountain is covered in a thick layer of the fluffy stuff, this one turns it into your personal playground.

“When every contour of the mountain is covered in a thick layer of the fluffy stuff, this one turns it into your personal playground”

The Bataleon Magic Carpet is a shorter, wider snowboard that features the most drastic version of the brand’s Triple Base Technology. The central section of base is much narrower than on other boards, with wide side sections that feature considerable uplift. Get this in pow and it’ll stay afloat as if by magic – hence the name.

It may be small, but it’s no weakling; carbon at the nose and tail give you pop and stability without making it too stiff end to end, but it’s still rigid enough to tackle bigger features and charge at higher speeds.

When there’s no powder around, you’ll be better off with the Bataleon Magic Carpet than the pointy-gun brigade. Go side-hit-hunting off the groomers, or lap the park to your heart’s content – this twin funstick can do it all – and it loves slushy days too.

The new ‘SideKick’ Tips have further enhanced what is already a modern classic, lifting the edge at the board’s widest points to improve turn initiation as well as powder float. For those who’ve never taken a Bataleon Magic Carpet ride, the time is now.

Tester’s Verdict

Darren Williamsthesnowboardshop.co.uk

“I love riding powder as much as the next guy, and the Bataleon Magic Carpet is one that excels in the fresh – but not only that, it’s much easier to ride switch and generally play about on, so it’s a great one to take out at any point in the season.

“Despite being pretty wide, changing from edge to edge is nice and smooth and doesn’t feel sluggish.”

The big spoony nose lifts up out of the snow to help alleviate leg burn while the base is super fast. Despite being pretty wide, changing from edge to edge is nice and smooth and doesn’t feel sluggish.

Because of the shape of the board, there’s plenty of volume so you can downsize a little from your regular size, adding to its playful feel.”
