Avoriaz’s Stash Celebrates Its 10th Birthday

Burton's iconic park celebrates a milestone

The last ten years have gone awfully fast right? 2008 saw Obama elected, a massive drum circle to kick off the Beijing Olympics and that funny South Park episode where they go looking for the internet. In fact, if it wasn’t for the global financial crisis it’s quite a nice year to look back on today, all things considered…

Another good thing that happened: Avoriaz‘s take on the Burton Stash – a series of powder-centric, all-natural terrain parks – opened for the first time. Using wood hewn from the forest it sat in, it established a multi-line park packed full of taps, log rails, wallrides and secret spots that are still evolving and going strong ten years down the line.

“Anyone who’s ever been will have a story to tell, whether it’s Nico Droz boosting over someone’s picnic or their mate Dave who broke his collarbone trying to boardslide a log”

There are other Stashes – Northstar in Cali, The Remarkables in NZ and Flachauwinkl in Austria to name a few – and Avoriaz’s wasn’t even the first, but that wooden behemoth snaking its way down under the Prolays chair is arguably the most iconic of the lot.

Team WL has spent a bunch of time there over the years, and the place even spawned a series in which celebrity riders did laps, Top Gear style – Stash Runs.

As it’s never been clearly marked off as a snowpark, it serves as a melting pot between holidaymaking families and angry local park rats – everyone clashes in The Stash. Anyone who’s ever been will have a story to tell, whether it’s Nico Droz boosting over someone’s picnic or their mate Dave who broke his collarbone trying to boardslide a log.

Costs gas, grass or ass

So what are French Shreddie and co doing to celebrate this momentous year? Starting on the 22nd of January there’s going to be a whole week of celebrations and contests including a Stash Gathering, banked slalom, retro board shaping, Step On demo centres and, of course, some BBQ-based parties. Free hot dogs for all!

Full details can be found on the Avoriaz website – we’d definitely suggest hitting it up if you’re in the area or fancy a last minute trip. Did we mention it’s free?
