“Amplid’s Mutant bindings make no exceptions in their construction or performance standards”

Who Is The Amplid Mutant For?

Rippers. Piste and powder are both on the menu here, but the key thing is the kind of rider who’s strapped into them. The Mutants are reserved for confident, aggressive and demanding riders who take a zero compromise approach to every component of their setup. 400 big ones is a pretty hefty price to pay, but if you know what you’re looking for, you’ll soon see the value in these things.

Baseplate

Made from a carbon-reinforced nylon composite, the baseplate offers an ultra-stable and responsive platform. Rider input will be instantly sent through the bindings and down into the board for knife-edge precision when riding on the limit. Thankfully, that carbon has the double benefit of soaking up some of the vibrations that will be getting sent back your way, too. The alloy heelcup is fully adjustable, so you can get your setup dialled in to perfection before the first lap.

Of course, there’s no point investing in this kind of performance when it falls short in the “comfort” bracket and only allows for a couple of laps before you’ve ground your teeth to the gums and have to limp back to the chalet to swap your setup for something a little more forgiving. You’ll find multi-density EVA cushioning with a Dual Air dampening chamber gives you that “riding on clouds” sensation when the going gets bumpy. Furthermore, the 3° of canting on each binding provides better anatomical alignment to save your knees and allow you to distribute pressure more effectively out to the ends of the board.

Straps and Highbacks

Once again, comfort meets performance. The highbacks are laminated with carbon and – take it from us – they’re stiff, but there’s ample cushioning on the inside and the forward lean can be adjusted on the fly with a simple twist of the dial.

The Lock Down straps take on a pretty minimal and cut back look, but the injection moulded design and reinforced spine on the ankle straps provide great coverage around your boots with direct response between your turns.

“Plush comfort and top-shelf performance needn’t trade off against each other”

Roundup

Plush comfort and top-shelf performance needn’t trade off against each other, there’s more than enough room for them to take up the mantle in a snowboard binding. But they don’t come cheap, and they rarely cater to a mass market. The Mutant is a case in point. In fact Amplid’s entire brand ethos is a case in point: snowboard products that are made for riders who really know what they’re looking for in their gear and aren’t prepared to settle for less.
