Adidas Samba ADV 2020-2021 Snowboard Boots Review

Why we chose the Adidas Samba ADV Snowboard Boots: The comfort of a skate shoe, the look of an iconic classic, and the performance of a quality freestyle boot.

Adidas split their range of snowboard boots into three categories: Boost, Icons and Skate-Inspired. No prizes for guessing which shelf the Samba ADV sits on. Along with the Superstar ADV, these instantly recognisable cult classics have not only cemented their iconic status in the city streets but high above the snow line in resorts around the world.

The overall look and feel of the boots definitely lean towards the freestyle side of the all-mountain divide. That said, the fit will always take priority when picking a pair of boots so, even if you’ve no intention of dropping into the park, the Samba’s could still make a great all-round option.

Their flex rating sits at 5/10 with a fit that remains snug and secure around the ankle but with a little more width in the toe box than the more performance-driven boots from Adidas – something that may suit riders who value all-day riding comfort or don’t want to slip into their crocs and cut the aprés short outside Cocoricos at 2 am.

Perhaps more important than the rating itself is the consistency and durability of the boot’s flex. Featuring both an articulated cuff and 3D moulded tongue, the upper portion of the Samba is able to progressively flex without blowing-out the lower portion of the boot or compromising the locked-in fit around the ankle.

That’s also down to the Silver Level Ultralon Liner, Adidas’ heat-mouldable liner that provides a customised, conforming fit for every rider’s feet. Heat them up in your local snowboard shop, get them fitted correctly and they’ll feel like the only boot you’ve ever worn right from the get-go.

In keeping with the classic look of the original shoe version, the Samba snowboard boots also feature a traditional lace-up system. There’s always going to be the sceptics who don’t understand why you’d tie your laces when you could have a metal coil do it for you, but there really are few alternatives out there that allow you to dial in such a personalised and specific fit as old school laces. Especially here, as the Instep Power Lacing System secures the shell and liner together with a quick pull of the lace.

In the absence of Adidas’ Boost Midsole, found in the likes of the Tactical Lexicon ADV or the Acerra 3ST ADV, there’s still a good amount of cushioning underfoot with the added bonus of the Continental Rubber Outsoles. These provide loads of traction and durability for endless days of hiking the park or simply dragging your heels back to the car at the end of a day’s riding.

Adidas have certainly been shifting ever deeper into the backcountry with a talented roster of freeride legends and a stash of performance-focused outerwear and boots, but inspiration from street and skate culture still runs deep in the brand. Never better exemplified than it is, right here, with the Sambas.
