The 50-50 is probably the simplest of all jibbing tricks and the first one you will learn. Basically, it means riding straight over a box or rail. In itself, not the most exciting move in the world, but when you link it into a combo things soon get a whole load more interesting. These three variations are ideal for the kind of flat-down box you find at most parks and snow domes, so why not give the 50-50 a chance?
Right, this is a great trick to do once you’ve mastered 50-50s and are looking to up your game andimpress the ladies. It is so much fun and will open the door to a lot of new rail combos. It’s also easier than you might think.
1. THE APPROACH
First things first – you need to find a good flatdown rail or box you’re comfortable with, take a few runs doing simple 50-50s and just get used to the speed you’ll need to hit it. When you’re ready to try something new, approach the rail with a flat base (careful you don’t go too fast, or you will end up flying off the end of the flat part and missing the down section, resulting in you landing on your arse!). Your weight should be centred over the board – stay relaxed with your knees slightly bent, and keep your eyes on the prize.
2. THE POP
Some rails/boxes you can just ride onto, but most of the time you’ll have to pop a little. Jump from your back foot, using flex in the tail of your board to help you spring. The kicker will do a lot of the work though, so don’t pop too hard or you might end up missing the box. Try to land perfectly in line with the box and centred over your board with your knees bent. Be careful not to catch an edge – keep your base flat.
3. POSITIONING
Keep your weight centred throughout the 50/50,but as you approach the down part of the box, shift your weight slightly to the front foot and bring your back foot in front of you. Again, make sure you keep the board flat so sure you don’t slide onto your edge.
4. STYLING
Once you’ve got into the board slide position, tweak your back foot out to the side whilst keeping your shoulders in line with the box. Your eyes should stay focused on the end of the down section. Not only will the extra tweak age look sick, it will also help you when you come to end of the rail and have to bring your board back round to land.
5. THE LANDING
Right, now here’s the tricky part that separates the men from the boys. Stay focused and confident, ready to land the trick. As you approach the end of the rail, give it a little pop and suck your knees up a bit to absorb the impact. You should land with the board flat based but slightly on your toe edge so you’re in control. Now get ready to ride off and claim it.
