19 Best Snowboard Mitts 2016-2017

UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Best Snowboard Mitts here

The Inuits figured it out long ago, and it’s still as true today: in cold-weather conditions, nothing beats a mitt.

By wrapping your entire hand around a solid layer of leather or durable synthetics, a mitt retains more of the natural warmth from your hand. At peak season this can make a world of difference to your day; there are still few things less pleasant than getting cold hands on the mountain.

“In cold-weather conditions, nothing beats a mitt”

That’s not to say that they’re only for when the mercury has dropped. Lightweight mitts are available for those who like the style but want something for spring conditions. If you’re still not quite sure what’s right for you, check out our guide to choosing your snowboard gloves.

The downside of wearing mitts is that you get less use of your fingers, so you may have to briefly remove your pair in order to do any fiddly jobs. There are ways around this, however; trigger mitts at least give you use of your index finger (more important than ever in the age of the touch-screen), and some mitts feature a zip that allows for quick access to your fingers without the need to fully expose your hands.

There’s a wide range of models here, covering all bases – and some are so nice that they’ve found their way into The Snowboard 100. A quick look at this list is bound to turn up something that you’d be glad to get your hands on (and indeed in) this winter.

Sitting up at the top end of DaKine’s range, the Baron might set you back a bit of extra coin, but if you demand the best, it’s got the tech to provide.

Lined with 230g of Primaloft insulation, 360g wool liner and with a Gore-Tex insert that’s held in place with Gore Grip, the chances of getting chilly digits while wearing these are about as slim as they get. And thanks to a slip on, stretch fitting, they’re not quite as bulky as some other models boasting similar specs.

Howl Sexton Snowboard Mitts 2016-2017

There’s old-school looking leather mitts, and then there’s Joe Sexton’s Howl pro model – breaking out a full goat leather/cow suede outer, with a rib-knit style cuff as a final touch.

Pairing up the protection of leather with permaloft insulation and a Hypora 10k/5k insert means that these are well equipped for the punishment of a full winter’s wear and weather, and with a slightly less conventional ‘Legion Blue’ colourwear available there’s enough option to mix it up if black’s too traditional.

Available in the black skull design as seen above, as well as a couple of brighter options, this’ll take some beating as a park/pipe specialist.

Transform Lucifer Snowboard Mitts 2016-2017

Ready for colder days, they feature waterproof/breathable Hipora inserts and Thinsulate insulation, with individual finger dividers in the liner to keep each digit toasty.

Leaning towards the freestyle end of things, the Hyper Grip palms feature a split skull design and won’t let grabs slip out in a hurry – while a low profile shape and touchscreen compatibility make these extra dextrous for the needs of modern park lappers.
